Some of the best books to learn about the Civil War can't be found in print. Many of them were published over 75 years ago and are out of copyright. Thanks to internet sources such as google books, it is much easier to find a lot of these sources. Here we present some of them.

Military Essays and Recollections - Vol. 1

Camp, Garrison and Guard Duty, with a Modified Manual of Arms for the Officers and Soldiers of the Michigan Infantry - By W. W. Duffield, Colonel, 9th Michigan Infantry Printed in Detroit and released at Fort Wayne (now Historic Fort Wayne) this was a drill manual written specifically for Michigan troops. Google Book Link
A Soldier's Diary: The Diary of a Volunteer - By David Lane Published in 1905, this is the diary of a member of the 17th Michigan and tells the story of that regiment through the eyes of a man who marched with them. Google Book Link

It is a list, organized alphabetically, of every man who served in the Civil War from Michigan. It includes the man's name, company and regiment he served in and the volume and page of the Record of Service books (commonly called the Brown Books) where more information on him can be found.
